2009 Gugak Festival, Rachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall. Photo (c) John Jacks.
One of my photography students, John, brought me a gift at his lesson last weekend: a gorgeous photograph mounted on a bamboo panel of a performer at the 2009 Gugak Festival in Virginia, organized by the the Korean National University of Arts.
I love this photo because of the beauty in its simplicity – the lack of distracting color, the straightforward shades of black & white, the simple elegance of its painterly strokes of light. I love it for its mystery, the story of an unknown dancer, face hidden from view. I love even the beautiful textures of the floor, highlighted in an eloquent trail of light that follows in the footsteps of its anonymous subject. I love that it reaches into my heart and touches my soul with its beauty.
John, many, many thanks for such a thoughtful gift! I’m going to be asking you to sign it for me at our next lesson! You should come up with a title for it! Plus, this photograph really deserves to be seen. I’ll be looking for juried exhibit opportunities for you over the coming months!
